BMW R 1200 GS Rallye 2017

The R 1200 GS has always stood at the sharp end of the adventure motorcycling arena but in recent times the competition has been closing in. With the 2017 release, BMW looks to regain control of the segment with a hugely improved 1200 GS. The unique concept of the bike with its sleek build and a powerful high-torque engine is a thrill to riders all across the world. 

Billed by BMW as more off-road-biased than the Exclusive, the new model bridges the gap between the standard GS and the big Adventure. You probably have heard that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but with 1200 GS, it goes as well as it looks. The new ESA and DTC are a great stride from BMW and the bike looks set to be hugely popular with adventure riders. 

Powered by 4-stroke 2 cylinder Boxer Flat Twin DOHC, the bike boasts incredible road performance. The engine capacity is at an impressive 1170 cc with the cylinder size and stroke length at 101 x 73 mm. The partial air and liquid-cooled Boxer lacks any major changes but the 2017 version comes with an updated catalytic converter and new cockpit data for the engine management system to meet Euro 4 compliance. The maximum power remains at 125 bhp at 7750 with maximum torque 92.2 ft-lb at 6500 rpm. Additionally, the bike has an electronic fuel dispensing unit and a 6 – speed manual transmission unit. 

The bike boasts some of the most dynamic features with hill start control, DTC, Shift Assistant pro, LED headlight, ABS pro, Riding Modes Pro and LED turn indicators. It also includes chrome exhaust system, dynamic ESA and Tire pressure control. According to BMW the Rallye suspension is optimised for more aggressive riding, with stiffer spring rates, longer spring struts, and added travel. That package also adds a Rallye seat (for easier moving around in off-road riding), a lower-cut windshield, radiator guard, frame guard, wide enduro footrests, and cross-spoke wheels.

2017 is going to be remembered as the year BMW raised the bar to a whole new level in adventure racing. For more than 35 years, the GS has impressed with its touring and long-distance suitability, along with great performance and off-road capability. It is a bike that can do it all and the latest edition adds a great poise and more refinement to the ride. 

Today, the BMW GS is still the firms reigning top seller and with the latest launch, it is safe to say the trend looks set to continue for a while.
